Flambez!
I got this book from Laila this christmas - she said the mix between food, flames and alcohol was something for me... Anyways, I haven't tried making anything from it until this weekend, because I was under the misconseption that 40 % alcohol didn't burn. It doesn't really burn well, that's true, until it's heated a bit, and has a larger surface, which you will get if you pour it into a frying pan. You'll get both. This I found out after some additional testing after re-reading in the book that it was supposed to burn at 40 %. Anyways. Since I went skiing with John, Hanneke, Kai and Britta, I've had this little bottle of Grand Marnier, that I bought on a ferry, for some reason. It was perfect. A recipe in the book suggested I used that to torch some crappy Spanish and not so sweet strawberries they have at Spar (not quite that directly - assuming that booze and sugar will do them good). But, turns out they didn't have strawberries anymore at Spar, so I went for bananas, fried in butter and brown sugar (and orgeat syrup (sirop d'orgeat), that I didn't know what was, and even now that I know that it is almond syrup, I also know that we don't have that, so that ingredient was skipped). Then I poured what I approximated to 1 dl of Captain Morgan Spiced Cold Jamaican Rum over the bananas and lit it. Right then, was when I started thinking that I might have mixed up the recipes where I was supposed to add 2 tablespoons and the one where I was supposed to add 1 dl. But at least it got flambé alright! No eyebrows or anything lost. Served with vanilla ice cream and almonds. Quite nifty. Nice book.
I left it to Steinar to get some footage of this event, but he's forgetful, and no good, so there are no pics. ;)
