TV
Regarding my last post, John has made me aware of two relevant books:
These books basically say that TV is inherently bad. TV sucks big time. It's not in its nature to be used for anything useful at all. It is unavoidably mind-numbing, uninvolving, and useless at best. At its worst it's lobotomizing, a danger for democracy, and open and free though. TV should be banned, and trying to reform it into something more productive than it is today is like trying to reform hand guns into something postive.
However, I think it'll be difficult to ban TV.
And these books were written in 1978 and 1984. Looking back on TV from 1984 is kinda fun for a Norwegian, we had only one channel. It might not have been the best of stuff even then. But I think it is safe to assume that the amount of crap on Norwegian TV has increased. I can't say anything about the ratio, but the absolute amount has increased. This is an evolution we could have had a say in, we can do something about TV. We can shape it. If we can't make it into something good, it could perhaps be possible to try to prevent it from getting even more rotten. Or?
