Lady Deirdre Skye and The Greens

Deirdre
The last few days, playing old computer games has been a motivation for trying to finish the thesis. For John urge for old code filled the house with generic PC-speaker "music" and "sound effects" of the pre-1980-computer era. John has a Macbook Pro, with a DVD-burner and a big LCD screen, he can remote control it with his Bluetooth mobile phone and download movies wirelessly - and yet he plays computer games designed for Apple ][ copyrighted in 1978.

For me the concept of "old" takes on a whole different shape, in Civilization II and Alpha Centauri. These are big time-wasters, but I don't have it in me to play that long anymore. But I gave it a go tonight.
Sid

I wouldn't say Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri has shaped my "green" orientation, but it generally has some good values: After Earth has been ripped apart by war and eco-damage (in "Civilization"), the UN sets out for a mission to a Planet orbiting the largest star in Alpha Centauri. The mission goes awry, of course, and splits into ideological factions. One of which is the Gaians, led by Lt. Commander Lady Deirdre Skye, who is an environmentalist, a pacifist (usually not for long though), love and peace and all.

Anyhow, years after playing Alpha Centauri, and completely unrelated, just coinciding - today John and I went to a Malmö Green Party "demonstration" of all things from the casino to one of the squares. The demonstration, or march was supposed to be quiet, no flags, not shouting, no banners, no sides to the conflict in the Middle East - just a silent walk for peace. We thought this was a good idea, and got up from our lazy asses and biked (of course) down there. The green people's faces lit up when they saw someone coming to the casino by bike, figuring gamblers don't. The green demonstration was only about 25 people. But very friendly and nice.

I kinda missed some kind of speach, a pep-talk, something, but no. Just a silent walk with torches.
